Strengthening Traditions, Building Future
We understand the importance of respecting cultural traditions and family connections for Indigenous and Non-Indigenous children and youth in need of out-of-home care. Our Formal Customary Care program provides a culturally appropriate placement option that prioritizes the well-being of children while honoring the wishes of their family, relations, and community.
What is Formal Customary Care?
Formal Customary Care is a collaborative approach to out-of-home care that is sanctioned by an Indigenous Nation (Band). It allows children to be placed with extended family members or other community members who understand their cultural background and traditions. This approach aims to maintain cultural connections, promote healing, and ensure the child’s sense of belonging.
Why Choose Formal Customary
Care with Eagle's Nest: A Place To Soar ?
Culturally Appropriate Placements
We work collaboratively with Indigenous Nations to identify suitable caregivers within their communities, ensuring placements that respect cultural traditions and values.
Community Support
Children placed in Formal Customary Care benefit from the ongoing support of their extended families and communities, fostering a strong sense of belonging.
Collaborative Approach
We work hand-in-hand with Indigenous Nations, caregivers, and child protection agencies to ensure the child's safety and well-being throughout the placement.
How Does Formal Customary Care
Work?
Referral and Assessment
An Indigenous Nation may identify a child who would benefit from Formal Customary Care and initiate a referral process.
Caregiver Selection
The Nation, in collaboration with Eagle’s Nest, identifies a suitable caregiver within the child’s community or from already approved Eagle’s Nest caregivers.
Agreement and Support
A formal agreement is established between the Nation, child’s biological family, caregiver, and child protection agency and Eagle’s Nest outlining the care plan and support services.
